FPIK UNDIP Strengthens Its Global Role: Prof. Desrina Presents Research on WSSV Transmission at DAA12 Conference in India

Chennai, India — Prof. Dr. Ir. Desrina, Head of the Department of Aquaculture, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Diponegoro University (FPIK UNDIP), participated in the 12th International Conference on Diseases of Asian Aquaculture (DAA12) held from September 23–27, 2025, in Chennai, India.

The DAA12 Conference is a leading scientific forum in the field of fish health, organized by the ICAR–Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIBA), India, in collaboration with the Fish Health Section – Asian Fisheries Society (FHS-AFS) and supported by various international institutions engaged in fish health and disease research. The DAA series has long been recognized as a prestigious platform that brings together researchers, academics, and practitioners from around the world who focus on the study and management of aquatic animal diseases.

At this prestigious event, Prof. Desrina attended as a member of the Executive Committee (ExeComm) of FHS-AFS, while also serving as one of the invited scientific presenters. She presented her research entitled:

“The White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) Transmission from Blood Cockle (Tegilarca granosa) to Pacific White Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei)”,

which highlights a crucial issue regarding the transmission mechanism of the White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) — one of the most devastating viral diseases affecting shrimp aquaculture globally.

Beyond her active participation, Prof. Desrina also gained international recognition during the conference. In the official FHS-AFS meeting, she was appointed as the new Secretary and Treasurer of FHS-AFS, succeeding Dr. Eduardo Leano from NACA, Thailand. This appointment stands as an acknowledgment of her significant contributions and dedication to the field of fish health in the Asian region.

Prof. Desrina also made use of her presence at DAA12 to strengthen international academic collaboration. She engaged in discussions and explored potential research and educational partnerships with two leading experts in the field: Prof. Naoki Itoh from the University of Tokyo and Dr. Kelly Bateman from the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), United Kingdom.

Prof. Desrina’s active involvement in DAA12 serves as a meaningful representation of Indonesia’s role particularly FPIK UNDIP’s in advancing scientific knowledge and promoting academic diplomacy on the global stage in the fields of aquaculture and fish health.
